How to Cleanse the Denial That's Polluting Your Life and Career!

Chapter 1: A Late-Night Revelation
Typically, I wouldn’t consider scrubbing my bathroom floor at twelve-thirty in the morning to be a moment of insight. However, that night proved me wrong. Perhaps it was the pungent odor from the powerful cleaning solution I had liberally applied, or maybe it was just the right time to face my reality.
As I knelt down to scrub the tiles, I was struck by how grimy my bathroom had become during the pandemic. I had clearly been in denial! I had ignored the dirty floor, fixtures, and hidden corners, convincing myself I was too busy to care. Yet, with my face nearly touching the floor, I couldn’t help but notice the dust, hair, and filth around the baseboards and the stained grout. It was frankly revolting!
Under the Bleachers
Growing up, I often cleaned beneath the bleachers of my father’s ice rink, where popcorn kernels soaked in stale beer stuck to half-eaten hotdogs. In comparison, my bathroom should have sparkled like a sterile operating room. But it didn’t. It was a wake-up call—an acknowledgment that I had allowed many aspects of my life to deteriorate. Did I think someone else would step in and tidy things up for me? When had it escalated to this point? Why hadn’t I noticed it sooner? More importantly, when would I start cleaning not just my bathroom, but my entire life and career?
Sometimes It Takes Time
Scrubbing didn’t always suffice. Many times, I had to let the cleaning solution sit and penetrate the grime. When I returned after twenty minutes, the dirt came off with ease. This made me ponder what areas of my life required a similar soaking and what solutions I could apply. How deep did my denial run?
Start at the Top
In tackling the bathroom cleanup, I wisely chose to begin with the cobwebs clinging to the twelve-foot ceilings. I realized that if I waited to deal with them, I would end up needing to clean up the mess they left behind. The same principle applies to life—what area needed my immediate attention for maximum impact? This was a tough question to answer. However, after evaluating eight common life areas I often discuss with clients, I quickly pinpointed the one that would influence the others the most.
The Domino Effect
Through self-reflection, it became evident that enhancing my career would have a ripple effect on my finances, relationships, health, fitness, spirituality, living environment, and family. My career aspirations were far more significant than what I had been permitting myself to pursue. Like the neglected bathroom, I realized I had been ignoring my true passions and playing it safe. My potential was immense, but my motivation, confidence, and determination were lacking. It was time to eliminate the excuses and start transforming my life.
Finding the Right Formula
I faced a decision: should I change my career, improve my current job, or combine various income streams into a new career path? How was I supposed to navigate this? Most of my past career choices were opportunities that came my way, but now I felt compelled to create something unique that would harmonize my passions, skills, and desires. I wasn’t looking for just any job; I craved something that would nourish my soul.
