Turn Your Wish List into a "Yes" List!
It’s common to fantasize about changes we desire:
- “If only I were slimmer, I would attract more dates.”
- “I wish I could lift heavier weights like my gym peers.”
- “If I had a better job, I’d earn more money.”
These thoughts lead to a growing "wish list," driven by the belief that our lives would drastically improve if only our circumstances were different. This mindset can lead to a perfect storm of hope and disappointment, as we fixate on our shortcomings instead of taking concrete steps to improve our lives.
The problem with wishing is that it often focuses solely on outcomes. We yearn to be healthier, wealthier, or more successful, but we lack a clear path to get there. This creates a cycle of self-defeating behavior: Wishes = Fantasy = Disappointment. By concentrating on what we lack, we risk leaving our true goals dormant, unrealized.
But does this mean we should abandon our aspirations? Not at all!
