Cancer: Chemotherapy and Natural Remedies: A Holistic Approach

Written on

Cancer is a word that strikes fear into many, and unfortunately, many of us have witnessed loved ones grappling with various forms of this illness.

When faced with such daunting news, individuals often claim they know how they would react, but the reality is that no one truly understands until they find themselves in that situation. I have seen individuals who typically embrace holistic methods turn to conventional treatments, while others who seem unlikely to do so pursue alternative, holistic paths.

These decisions can be life-defining and can change in an instant. It’s essential to approach these moments with compassion, as many people fear being judged for their choices. What they truly need is love, support, and understanding, regardless of your personal opinions on their decisions. Remember to always be humble and kind.

While I can’t predict how I might respond if faced with a cancer diagnosis, I do believe I would incorporate holistic approaches, including the healing potential of herbs (and mushrooms, but that’s a topic for another day).

As I continue to reflect on this topic, I know I will uncover more information over time, especially if this evolves into a series (which it likely will).

What is Chemotherapy?

Chemotherapy, often referred to as “chemo,” is a cancer treatment that utilizes various drugs. Instead of solely viewing chemotherapy through a negative lens, I recommend checking out an insightful article from the Cleveland Clinic:

Chemotherapy involves administering specific chemicals; however, it’s the type of chemicals that plays a crucial role. I’ll delve deeper into this in future research, but I hope the linked article provides valuable insights.

Common Side Effects of Chemotherapy

Nausea & Fatigue.

These side effects are prevalent and can significantly impact the recovery process. It's vital to find ways to mitigate these effects to support oneself through this challenging period.

Your body is already battling rapidly multiplying cancer cells, and now it has to contend with treatments aimed at eliminating them. Many view chemotherapy as highly toxic, which can pose risks to those not undergoing treatment, necessitating precautions, such as separate bathrooms.

However...

There is Always Hope!

It’s essential to know where to seek help.

Before we explore herbal remedies, let’s consider this thought:

> “Cancer cells can manipulate epigenetics by silencing genes that suppress tumors. While some chemotherapy drugs aim to restore the body’s defenses, their use is often limited due to toxicity.”

> “Fortunately, numerous compounds found in plants—like beans, greens, and berries—exhibit similar effects naturally. For instance, consuming broccoli sprouts can suppress the enzyme that cancer cells use to evade our defenses, potentially achieving results equal to or exceeding those of chemotherapy, but without the toxic side effects.” (1)

Next, we will discuss herbs that may alleviate chemotherapy-induced nausea, so stay tuned!

Thank You for Reading!

GINGER!

This herb is a superstar when it comes to digestive issues, making it a staple in my home, especially for those undergoing chemotherapy. It’s known for its safety and effectiveness in reducing nausea.

> “A study by the National Cancer Institute found that taking 0.5–1.0 g of ginger three days before and after chemotherapy, alongside anti-nausea medications, can reduce nausea by an additional 40%.” (2)

Additionally, ginger supports circulation, joint health, and immune function. Its antioxidant properties add a delightful flavor to juices, teas, or meals; I often blend it with turmeric in vegetable broths or smoothies.

Major Announcement!

Curious about saffron, I searched for its relationship with cancer and chemotherapy. I was already aware of its numerous benefits, such as emotional support, energy enhancement, and sleep improvement.

Wow! The information I found was enlightening!

Man, I adore saffron, herbs, plants, and the wonders of nature!

Let’s keep the excitement rolling with more on saffron in future articles.

Probiotics?

Chemotherapy can devastate healthy gut bacteria, leading to nausea, diarrhea, and nutrient malabsorption. Thus, I highly recommend integrating probiotics into your daily routine (ensure to do your research to find the best fit for you).

If you’re skeptical, check out this article:

> “Good bacteria can temper chemotherapy side effects.”

We need these beneficial bacteria for digestion and nutrient absorption, so nourish them regularly!

Next Up: Beloved Peppermint!

Interestingly, while peppermint is fantastic internally, studies show peppermint essential oil can effectively alleviate post-chemotherapy nausea.

> “Peppermint oil significantly reduced the frequency and severity of nausea in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.”

Additionally, peppermint has a long history of use in herbal teas for digestive support and nausea relief. Its antiviral and antibacterial properties contribute to overall health, emphasizing that a healthy body starts in the mouth!

On a personal note, hot chocolate has always been my go-to when I feel unwell. Mixing peppermint tea with healthy hot chocolate is a delightful remedy!

We can continue this discussion later, so stay tuned for more articles!

To everyone navigating their health journey, don’t lose hope. Remind yourself of your strength and the wellness that awaits you!

Sending positive energy, prayers, and hugs your way every day!

It’s essential to recognize that our bodies are continually making errors, including with cancer cells; however, our bodies are incredibly intelligent and equipped with mechanisms to maintain health for as long as possible. As I’ve always said, we simply need the right ingredients, and we’ll explore that further in time.

With love and hopes for a brighter tomorrow, here’s to your health and well-being.
