Understanding the Universe: Embrace Its Indifference to You

Written on

Chapter 1: The Universe's Indifference

Many people express sentiments like, “The universe is on my side,” as if it were a supportive friend or a benevolent figure. This perspective is misguided; the universe is an immense entity, far beyond our comprehension. Its vastness is so staggering that it's hard to fully grasp.

If we consider the possibility of a creator for the universe, it raises the question of what created that creator. Is there an endless chain of creation? The nature of the universe—whether it is infinite or finite—remains a topic of debate among scientists. Personally, my spiritual beliefs guide my understanding; I don't believe the universe was created nor that it will ever cease to exist. I view it as a physical expression of a deeper essence—one that is eternal and unchanging.

However, this is merely my perspective; the reality of the universe is beyond human understanding. It simply exists, unfolding continuously, without end.

You Are Just a Small Part of It

The universe does not concern itself with individual fortunes or misfortunes. It remains indifferent to whether you win a lottery, suffer a job loss, or achieve success. The universe doesn’t favor any nation or individual, nor does it respond to personal triumphs or failures. It is simply too vast to take notice.

The universe—often synonymous with concepts like God, the Tao, or the Great Spirit—is immeasurable, as are we. Instead of presuming to understand it, we should approach it with humility and awe. While scientists have proposed that the universe began with the big bang approximately 13.8 billion years ago, there are still credible voices questioning this theory. We should be cautious about claiming certainty regarding the universe's nature.

An ancient wisdom reminds us of the importance of humility:

The tao that can be told

is not the eternal Tao.

—Tao Te Ching, Verse 1

Contemplating the vastness of the universe

Meditating on the Universe

At 13, I often avoided gazing up at the night sky, overwhelmed by the universe’s complexity. It evoked feelings of fear, akin to the wrath of a preacher or the unknown of UFOs. The enormity of it all made me painfully aware of my own insignificance.

Now, I find solace in contemplating the universe. Zen philosophy reassures me that my true nature is eternal and unchanging, which comforts me. Perhaps, in some future existence, my essence will return in another form. Yet, if that occurs, I will remain unaware.

The Tao is akin to a well:

used but never depleted.

It resembles the eternal void:

filled with limitless potential.

— Tao Te Ching, Verse 4

So, What Does My Understanding of the Universe Suggest?

Be humble and embrace the universe without fear. Look up and marvel at its grandeur. Align yourself with its flow; when you do, you become unstoppable. The universe embodies life, and so do you.

Rather than resisting the current of life, navigate it gracefully. Although you cannot alter its course, you can steer your journey. The universe will overpower you if you attempt to fight against it. Instead, harness the power that the universe provides.

Once you cease resisting, life improves, and you may find yourself in a position to uplift others.

“It is hidden but always present.

I don’t know who gave birth to it.

It is older than God.”

— Tao Te Ching, Verse 4

Thank you for engaging with this unconventional narrative. While I may express grand ideas, I recognize my own limitations. At least I am aware of what I do not know.

Take care of yourself.
