The Ultimate Note-Taking App of 2022: My Journey to Logseq

Written on

Chapter 1: My Transition from Notion

In recent months, I made the decision to move away from Notion for my note-taking and idea management. My primary issue was the constant need to customize my pages each time I wanted to input new information. While it's true that customization isn’t mandatory, seeing the impressive layouts of others pressured me into enhancing my own pages, which was ultimately a distraction from my actual work.

As my Notion pages accumulated content and customizations, the loading times began to frustrate me. Furthermore, I grew uncomfortable with the privacy implications of Notion, knowing that all my notes were stored on their servers. Although they claim not to access individual accounts, I felt a lack of control over my own information.

One aspect I will miss from Notion is its database feature; however, since I wasn't utilizing it extensively, I felt ready to explore a solution that better aligned with my workflow.

Section 1.1: Discovering RemNote

During my time as a university student, I stumbled upon RemNote, which stood out to me as a suitable alternative. I appreciated its user-friendly features that allowed me to input information without unnecessary delays.

The Flashcard functionality particularly impressed me, as it facilitated quick learning. The aesthetic of links, the efficient outlining system, backlinks, and the organized structure of documents and folders contributed to my positive experience.

After a couple of months of using RemNote, I began to seek a more robust solution to serve as my digital brain following my university assessments.

Section 1.2: Finding the Right Fit

Logseq interface showcasing note-taking features

After experimenting with various applications like Obsidian and Roam Research, I ultimately chose Logseq. This outliner note-taking app bears similarities to Roam Research but offers superior features at no cost, unlike Roam's $15 monthly fee.

While I explored Obsidian, I found it overly complex, and even after watching tutorial videos, I struggled to grasp its functionality. I was in search of a native outliner note-taking tool, which I realized was essential for my needs.

Chapter 2: Why Logseq Stands Out

Logseq has won me over with its free access and impressive features. As an outliner application, it offers backlinking capabilities while prioritizing user privacy through local graph creation. This allows users to store their data in local folders if preferred.

Additionally, Logseq provides a reliable synchronization system for cloud storage, a mobile app for on-the-go access, and an array of plugins and themes that let users personalize their experience.

There's much more to explore about Logseq, but I wanted to highlight this exceptional software that I've thoroughly enjoyed. I believe it's the top note-taking application of the year from my perspective.

I plan to write a detailed review of Logseq soon and may even create a video demonstrating my workflow and how others can set up their own.
