Savoring Life's Little Moments: A Journey of Awareness

Chapter 1: The Wake-Up Call
This morning was yet another struggle as I woke up feeling low. It’s becoming a recurring theme this week. I keep telling myself that I need to implement some changes, but where to begin? Perhaps it’s not about a complete overhaul. Maybe it’s about simply paying attention to the little things around me. For instance, the way sunlight illuminated the kitchen counter this morning made everything seem golden. It’s curious how that fleeting moment lifted my spirits. While it may seem insignificant, I plan to actively notice more of these details and observe the impact.
I started my workday late once again. Although there’s no supervisor hovering over me, my business won’t manage itself. I made an effort to practice this awareness I’ve been pondering. I noticed my assistant, Sarah, smiling at her phone—likely texting her child. It reminded me to reach out to my mum.
During lunch, I had my usual sandwich, but halfway through, I realized I hadn’t truly savored it. I was too engrossed in scrolling through my phone. Putting it aside allowed me to actually taste the tomato. It was... decent. Not extraordinary, but certainly better than mindlessly eating without appreciation.
The afternoon felt slow, yet I managed to complete that report. It might not seem like much, but progress is progress. Baby steps, right? That’s the mantra my yoga instructor often repeats. While I sometimes feel like throwing something at her, perhaps there’s wisdom in her words.
I skipped the gym yet again, but I opted to walk home instead of taking the bus. During my walk, I spotted a resilient little flower growing amidst a construction site. It brought a smile to my face.
Dinner was a quick microwave meal. I thought about calling Mum but decided it was too late. I’ll definitely do it tomorrow.
Now, as I lie in bed reflecting on the day, I realize it wasn’t perfect, but it also wasn’t terrible. That’s a win, right? Maybe this practice of noticing isn’t as pointless as I once thought. I’ll give it another shot tomorrow. What other options do I have?
Note to self: Purchase better tomatoes and remember to call Mum.
