The Common Cold: A Seasonal Challenge

Spring often brings with it a surge in colds and flus. During one particularly challenging shift as a line cook, I found myself battling a fever. Despite feeling awful, I had to endure my shift due to a lack of coverage. Thankfully, I was in the back, away from serving customers.

In those days, I worked alongside a remarkable Dominican woman who was like a nurturing figure in the kitchen. On the day I was unwell, she brought me a steaming cup of tea and simply said, "beber."

When I inquired about it, she referred to it as "Cerveza de bruja." It was unlike anything I had ever tasted—almost like a potion that rejuvenated me. My recovery was nothing short of miraculous. After finishing that tea, I felt as if I had been reborn, filled with newfound energy!

A Few Days Later...

She shared the list of ingredients with me, and for nearly ten years, whenever illness struck, Cerveza de bruja became my go-to remedy. My years in the culinary field taught me to take a holistic approach to health, one that often involved merely taking some ibuprofen and resting.

My mentor used to say, "If your mom's not dead, you're not dead, and if you're not experiencing a full-blown crisis, I expect you at work." While that may sound graphic, those in the service industry understand the sentiment. As you climb the ranks in this field, the concept of taking a sick day becomes almost obsolete.

Cerveza de Bruja: A Game Changer

The introduction of Cerveza de bruja was transformative. It offered a simple yet effective remedy for those times when work didn't allow for rest. Given that I'm recovering from an illness myself and with cold season upon us, I feel compelled to share this recipe.

Cerveza de Bruja Recipe:

  • 2 cups water at 180°F
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice (must be fresh)
  • 1 teaspoon unfiltered apple cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 large chunk of ginger, minced
  • 4 slices of jalapeño (seeds intact)

Combine all the ingredients in the hot water and let them steep for 4 to 6 minutes.

Important: For authentic Cerveza de Bruja results, consume the leftover ingredients after drinking the liquid.

This lightly sweet and spicy brew would often grant me an extra four hours of clarity and energy. Next time you feel under the weather, brew yourself a cup of this tea. It can help alleviate symptoms, provide an energy boost, and potentially break a fever overnight.

Sometimes, life simply doesn't allow for the luxury of being sick.
