Navigating Social Media in the Age of AI: A New Perspective

Chapter 1: The Value of Real Estate vs. Education

If you're looking to appreciate the worth of assets, investing in property is generally wiser than pursuing a degree in economics. The financial commitment for both avenues—considering four years of tuition, living costs, and lost income—is comparable. However, at the end of your educational journey, you’ll possess a house that holds intrinsic value.

It's essential to recognize that the property will not retain its purchase price. When reviewing insurance policies, you'll notice a figure known as the rebuild cost—the amount your insurer will compensate if your home is destroyed. In many reasonable areas of Northern Europe, this amount typically ranges from 50% to 70% of the original purchase price, and in desirable locales, the value often hinges more on location than the structure itself.

Location plays a critical role in real estate pricing, leading to significant variances even among similar properties situated close to one another. For instance, most readers have likely observed that homes in upscale neighborhoods command higher prices compared to nearly identical homes in less desirable areas. However, it is important to remember that the concepts of "upscale" and "less desirable" are subjective and can change over time.

Take London as an example. Many areas that were once considered undesirable saw a dramatic increase in property values. Those who bought homes in those neighborhoods during the 1970s capitalized significantly by the early 2000s, as the city transformed into the heart of "Cool Britannia." Despite the changes in perception, the fundamental aspects of the neighborhoods remained largely unchanged—streets were still dirty, public transportation was the same, and children still attended the same schools as their parents. Yet, the value of homes built before Margaret Thatcher's era skyrocketed.

Real estate value is influenced heavily by location, which can surge significantly in popularity, while the intrinsic value of the physical structure is mainly determined by material, labor, and logistics costs. This means that the expense of rebuilding after a disaster remains relatively stable. You can accrue substantial wealth through rising location value without facing equivalent risks.

In contrast, the digital real estate landscape is quite different. Many early adopters of social media established robust presences simply by being among the first to join. We were akin to those who bought homes in London back in the 70s—social media gained traction, and we were already present. However, in recent years, algorithms have increasingly marginalized our contributions as they no longer align with the advertising goals of contemporary platforms.

I harbor some resentment about this shift, yet I comprehend the rationale. Initially, social media platforms had a limited user base, and their growth stemmed from organic network effects. Friends introduced friends to sites like Facebook, fostering intimate engagement, even among those of us who aspired to reach a broader audience.

Yet, engaging with thousands of users won't propel a social platform into becoming the advertising powerhouse its investors envision. Consequently, once a platform achieves a certain level of popularity, it shifts its focus toward widely shareable content that appeals to the masses while advertisements are interspersed. This approach is commercially sensible, but it inadvertently sidelines many early users.

As the platform—your virtual location—grows in popularity, the cost of re-establishing your presence in the wake of algorithm changes significantly escalates due to increased competition for visibility. The benefits you gained from early adoption may not outweigh the risks associated with rebuilding.

Anyone with a substantial investment in their social media presence faces a looming disaster risk—social media platforms are actively exploring strategies to address AI, and not all will succeed. We are witnessing divergent approaches: Medium has imposed a ban, TikTok is tightening restrictions, Meta platforms are merely categorizing AI content, while LinkedIn encourages its generation.

We remain uncertain about which strategies will prevail, which platforms may falter, or how users on the platforms that endure will be affected by these transformations. Should we guess at the outcome? Or perhaps it’s more prudent to invest in real estate.
