The Journey to Professional Success
At the age of 14, I embarked on my business journey fueled solely by enthusiasm. By the time I turned 21, I had identified eight key soft skills that turned that enthusiasm into a structured path to success. I’d like to share this transformative experience with you.

By my 21st birthday, I had crystallized my experiences into eight core soft skills that undeniably directed my professional growth. Here’s a closer look at these invaluable skills.
Section 1.1 Making Others Feel Valued (SHR Method)
Through numerous interactions with clients, colleagues, and mentors, I came to understand that making individuals feel important is crucial. Here’s how I achieved that using the SHR Method:
- Seen: Eye Contact: While it may seem basic, maintaining eye contact signifies attention, respect, and understanding.
- Compliments: A genuine, specific compliment can elevate someone’s mood and enhance the interaction.
- Heard: Active Listening: This involves not just hearing words but truly understanding them. Asking relevant questions demonstrates your engagement.
- Switch Your Approach: Rather than striving to be the center of attention, showing authentic interest in others was a major breakthrough for me.
- Remembered: Regular Follow-Up: This simple gesture reflects your commitment and respect for others’ time and insights.
- Remember Details: In our fast-paced lives, recalling a small detail from a past conversation can make a lasting impression.
Reflect on this: When did you last feel genuinely seen, heard, and remembered? How impactful was that experience?
Section 1.2 Refining Your Body Language (7–38–55 Rule)
Effective communication transcends mere words. I discovered a powerful insight: people perceive communication as follows—7% words, 38% tone and facial expressions, and a significant 55% body language. The implications are clear:
- Posture: A confident stance communicates self-assurance non-verbally.
- Smile and Eye Contact: Utilize these tools thoughtfully.
- Handshake: A firm handshake can establish rapport even before verbal communication begins.

Section 2.1 The 4 Bullet Update Technique
Time is a valuable commodity, especially for decision-makers. To keep updates concise and actionable, consider these steps:
- Summarize the task or responsibility.
- Outline the steps taken or progress achieved.
- Identify potential challenges or obstacles.
- Provide insights into future actions or improvements.
Section 2.2 Analyzing Your Speaking Skills
This may have been one of the most intimidating challenges I faced. I started recording my conversations and calls, analyzing them for clarity, coherence, and effectiveness. While uncomfortable, the benefits were undeniable. Eliminate unnecessary fillers, refine your pitch, and enhance your delivery.
Section 2.3 Building Rapport Through Questions
Meaningful connections are fundamental to sustainable professional relationships. Here are some questions that proved invaluable:
- Personal Interests: “What part of town do you reside in?”
- Family: “How many siblings do you have?”
- Future Plans: “Any exciting vacations planned?”
Section 2.4 Weekly Highlights Email
I implemented a simple strategy early on to foster trust: sending a brief email every Friday summarizing the week’s achievements and outlining plans for the next week. This practice promotes transparency and showcases dedication.
Section 2.5 Avoiding Negativity
Over time, I recognized that negativity rarely contributes positively. Complaining can label you as a pessimist, while gossip can harm your credibility. Focus on a constructive mindset, emphasizing solutions over problems.
Final Thoughts on the Power of Soft Skills
In the seven years since I began my entrepreneurial journey, these soft skills have guided me. While technical expertise is vital, it is the soft skills that bridge the gap between mere competence and true success. Reflect on these insights, adapt them to your own style, and observe how they can enhance your professional interactions and achievements.
