Using MRI to Examine Bodily Responses During Intimacy
In the late 20th century, drawing inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci’s anatomical illustrations of sexual acts, Dutch physician Van Anders initiated a groundbreaking study to analyze the subtle physiological changes that occur during sexual encounters.
One day, while observing an MRI scan, Van Anders had a lightbulb moment: “What if we could record sexual activity with an MRI? Could this enhance our understanding of sexual behavior?”
Without delay, he shared his idea with two friends, but they quickly declined his invitation; understandably, few wish to partake in intimate activities under observation.
Predictably, Van Anders anticipated their reluctance and devised a strategy. He offered an attractive incentive and assured them, “Only the three of us will know what transpires.”
In desperate circumstances, unconventional methods often prevail. Consequently, his friends, enticed by the generous offer, agreed to participate, leading to the setup of a naked couple in the MRI machine.
The most challenging aspect of the study for the couple was maintaining a specific posture without any movement for a full ten minutes to allow for accurate scanning.
Afterward, Van Anders recognized that data from a single couple would not suffice. To gather more comprehensive information, he began recruiting participants from the broader community.
Despite a growing openness about the subject of sex, many were still hesitant to engage in such an intimate act under surveillance.
This reluctance made it significantly harder for Van Anders to find participants. However, he remained undeterred, launching an extensive advertising campaign on television, promising generous compensation to attract a wide array of individuals.
Ultimately, after persistent efforts, he successfully recruited eight couples for the study. Through a series of experiments, Van Anders collected a robust dataset indicating that during sexual activity, the human body releases substantial hormones, resulting in notable changes in various organs, including increased muscle tension and elevated heart rates.
The findings revealed that the average heart rate during sexual intercourse can soar to approximately 145 beats per minute—over double the normal rate. Such rapid heart activity raises concerns about potential heart issues and inadequate blood flow to the brain, leading some experts to suggest that sexual activity might pose a risk of sudden death.
Interestingly, as early as 1928, American physician Ernest Böhrs had already hinted at these risks.
