Confronting the Gym Bully: A Tale of Courage and Hope

Written on

Chapter 1: The Encounter

This morning, I found myself engulfed in a wave of frustration at the gym. As I was lifting dumbbells in front of the mirror, I noticed a large, intimidating figure approaching. He was a hefty man, trying to appear more formidable than he truly was, and clearly irritated that I was in his way.

At that moment, I remembered the words of Saint Augustine: "Hope has two beautiful daughters; their names are Anger and Courage." My anger was sparked not just by his presence but by the memories of my past encounters with bullies.

When he barked at me to move, I shot back, “Do you kiss your belly with that mouth?” His reaction was a moment of self-reflection, followed by an angry retort that he would “kick my ass.”

Yet, I had learned a thing or two about handling bullies from my childhood, growing up among five siblings, where conflict was a regular occurrence. The key to dealing with an insecure bully is to call their bluff.

As he puffed out his chest, trying to assert dominance, I raised my weights with confidence and dropped them to the floor, creating a loud noise. I met his gaze and challenged him: “Are we going to settle this here, or do you want to take it outside and box like real men?”

His bravado melted away, replaced by fear as he glanced around at the onlookers. Ultimately, he chose to retreat, muttering that he didn’t have time for me. His departure was a victory for me, and perhaps a lesson for him.

What does this story have to do with Saint Augustine? It reminds us that confronting bullies can be an act of courage inspired by our anger at injustice. My hope is that his embarrassment will lead him to reconsider his behavior in the future.
