Celebrating Carl Sagan Day: Embracing Our Shared Humanity

Chapter 1: The Cosmic Connection
On this day dedicated to Carl Sagan, I am reminded to take a moment to gaze at the stars and recognize in their brilliance the hopes, fears, joys, and sorrows that define our unique existence.
As a child, I marveled at the night sky from our home on a hillside in rural California, long before industrialization altered the landscape or the grim realities of climate change took hold. In those moments, I felt a profound joy in the vastness of the universe and my small part in it.
Even now, as an adult, my gaze remains upward, undiminished in hope. While humanity faces significant challenges ahead, we must confront our misconceptions about the universe and our role within it. Nevertheless, there remains abundant opportunity for wonder and joy. We can look skyward and connect with the shared humanity of our ancestors and countless living beings who exist in this moment.
Few public figures in the last century have contributed as much goodness to humanity as Carl Sagan. He epitomized the ideal scientist, recognizing that reason and compassion can coexist beautifully. His efforts to protect humanity and promote cosmic exploration continue to inspire.
Sagan described life as “numinous,” a deeply aesthetic experience filled with wonder. I still feel that sense of awe today, despite the challenges we face. I believe seeking a life connected to this numinous experience is one of the greatest pursuits, and our fulfillment can often be measured by how well we embrace the wonder of existence.
However, in recent times, space exploration has been co-opted by wealthy individuals and corporations, distorting its noble potential for personal gain. Figures like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk do not embody the best of humanity. The anger many feel towards the dangers posed by initiatives like Starlink resonates with me.
Space exploration should be a collective human endeavor, transcending personal interests and aimed at exploring the vast unknown together. We must recognize that profit should not dictate our aspirations; instead, we should strive for a collective advancement that reflects our shared artistic and intellectual depth.
Our feelings of horror at the greed and violence that permeate our world must evolve beyond mere anger. While anger can be a catalyst for change, it is solidarity, kindness, and love that will pave the way for a better future.
Thus, on this Carl Sagan Day in 2023, my hope is for increased solidarity rooted in kindness and love.
Take care, friends, and be gentle with yourselves.
