Achieving a Life of Purpose: Lessons from My Journey

Chapter 1: A Transformative Journey
Throughout my life, I’ve come to realize that my business partner has always possessed what I truly desired.
My perspective on the early days of our advertising venture has shifted dramatically as I’ve matured and embraced sobriety. The remnants of my past life serve as a reminder of the lessons I’ve learned. I owe much to a higher power, the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous, and the unwavering support of those around me, especially my wife and business partner, Nancy.
In the early 2000s, when Nancy and I established our advertising agency, it became a means to bolster my inflated sense of self while simultaneously fueling my growing addiction. I consider myself fortunate that she chose to stay by my side. My arrogance often blinded me to her insights on various matters. I fancied myself as the visionary, while she adeptly handled the agency’s finances—a responsibility I foolishly thought was beneath me. Nancy was satisfied with our stable progress and made wise choices for our future, including saving for our sons' education. I, on the other hand, was caught up in dreams of expansion and grandeur. After a few drinks, I would mock her for her practicality, believing myself to be the creative mastermind while dismissing her contributions.
Despite my reckless choices, our agency flourished. I generated innovative ideas, garnered accolades, and attracted new clients, leading to an increase in our workforce. I dedicated long hours, working evenings and weekends. We enjoyed travel, shopping sprees, and home improvements, living a lifestyle marked by luxury cars and a beautiful home. Life seemed perfect.
However, my career trajectory was all too predictable for someone grappling with alcoholism. It wasn’t long before my absence and misguided decisions began to wreak havoc. Employees and clients started to leave, and the business began to falter. Eventually, I reached rock bottom.
It was at this desperate juncture that I discovered the transformative power of desperation and sought treatment. During this time, I was introduced to Alcoholics Anonymous and began earnestly working through the steps. I stumbled, fell, but always picked myself back up. With the guidance of a patient sponsor and the forgiveness of Nancy, I began to alter my ways.
The road to recovery was challenging yet rewarding. I made amends to former employees and committed to diligently serving our remaining clients. Nancy and I embarked on the journey of rebuilding both our marriage and our business. This process gave me the chance to reflect on my past actions and appreciate the qualities I had once criticized in others.
While I have made substantial progress, remnants of my past still linger. I’ve come to realize that a meaningful life is not measured by material wealth but by honesty, accountability, and kindness. In a moment of clarity, I recognized and admired the attributes that Nancy has consistently exhibited: dedication, contentment, integrity, and humility.
Now, nearly 28 years sober, I continue to strive for the fulfilling life that my business partner and wife, Nancy, has so effortlessly embraced—a life characterized by responsibility, integrity, and a steadfast sense of purpose. I aspire to have what she possesses.
