Understanding Autistic Burnout: Signs and Coping Strategies

Recognizing Autistic Burnout

Burnout is a complex experience that doesn't lend itself to easy measurement. Unlike physical dimensions, burnout's intensity is not quantifiable. Despite its elusive nature, there are clear indicators when burnout strikes.

A predominant sign is an overwhelming sense of fatigue. However, this is not typical tiredness that can be resolved with a good night's sleep. Instead, it's a relentless exhaustion that clings to you like an unwelcome guest, infiltrating every aspect of life. Imagine enduring the fatigue typically felt after a taxing day at work, but experiencing that feeling every moment for months or even years.

For me, this form of burnout is particularly pronounced due to my autistic nature and has arisen from prolonged periods of sensory overwhelm. I have not been adequately addressing my autistic needs, often suppressing my true self.

I have failed to establish a stable routine, frequently exposing myself to overwhelming stimuli, and have taken on too many responsibilities without allowing time for self-soothing activities. As a result, tasks that once seemed manageable now feel insurmountable.

When mental resources are depleted, even the simplest tasks can become monumental challenges. It feels as if my cognitive capabilities have been severely strained, leading to a need for recovery.

In these moments of severe burnout, I can physically feel the pressure on my brain, as if it is straining under a heavy load. Tasks that were once straightforward, like sending an email, can feel like climbing a mountain.

As I navigate through this, I often find myself irritable, snapping at those around me — not out of malice, but as a means of seeking space and solitude. Unfortunately, resting as much as I need is not feasible due to ongoing responsibilities. Bills must be paid and daily tasks completed, leading to a precarious existence where I grasp for moments of stillness to replenish my energy.

Rest for many might involve watching television, but during intense burnout, even that can be overwhelming. The barrage of stimuli from the screen can become unbearable, making it difficult to focus on familiar stories that once brought joy.

Thus, I find myself retreating into quiet, dark spaces to escape the sensory overload. Though this retreat may appear calm, internally, it can feel like a chaotic storm, filled with turbulent thoughts and emotions.

In these moments of isolation, self-doubt and despair can surface, making it easy to feel defeated. However, it's crucial to recognize that taking time to heal is not a sign of failure but a necessary step towards recovery.

It requires strength to hold onto the belief that this phase will eventually pass, even when evidence suggests otherwise. Cultivating faith in your resilience can create a strong foundation for healing.
