Unagi Model One Electric Scooter: My Experience and Insights

Written on

Chapter 1: My Journey with the Unagi Model One

I recently completed my first twenty miles on the Unagi Model One E500 Dual Motor Electric Scooter, and I must say, I'm absolutely thrilled with it. The level of freedom that this electric scooter provides is truly remarkable. My daily commute isn't far, but driving has always been a hassle, often involving long periods of sitting in traffic just to cover a few miles. Biking isn’t feasible due to the steep hills, Uber fares accumulate quickly, and walking just isn’t practical for me.

About a month ago, on a whim, I signed up for the Unagi All-Access Subscription, and it has significantly enhanced my life. I genuinely enjoy my commutes now and even find myself looking forward to them. I often invent reasons to go out just to extend my riding time.

Based on my initial twenty miles—though it's not extensive by many Unagi users' standards—here are ten features I love about my Unagi Model One Electric Scooter:

  1. Stunning Aesthetics: This scooter looks fantastic! People frequently stop me to ask about it. Youngsters (and the young at heart) often ask to take it for a spin—definitely not happening! Riding it gives me a sense of confidence knowing I’m on one of the best scooters available, whether I own it or rent it.
  2. Fun Factor: Riding this scooter is pure joy. Maybe it’s my inner child, but I find it far more enjoyable than biking. It feels more like an electric skateboard with handlebars than a traditional scooter.
  3. Whisper-Quiet Operation: The Unagi Model One glides silently, regardless of speed. This is particularly nice for late-night rides around the neighborhood, though there's one sound issue I’ll touch on later.
  4. Intuitive Ride: The ride is smooth on flat surfaces, yet you can feel the road when it gets bumpy. While it lacks robust suspension, I appreciate this feature as it keeps me alert to changes in terrain, preventing potential mishaps.
  5. Adequate Hill Performance: The dual-motor setting makes conquering hills effortless. I weigh 185 pounds and typically carry an additional 10 to 15 pounds in my backpack. Now that I know how to switch between motor settings, tackling inclines is straightforward.
  6. Travel-Friendly: I can easily take my Unagi scooter anywhere. Whether I’m traveling or need to ride in an Uber (especially when it rains), it fits conveniently in the trunk. I’m excited to take it with me to South Florida soon for local exploration.
  7. Bright Lights: The scooter features bright lights with a wide field of view. I often travel a dark stretch of road, and the illumination is so strong that it resembles a police spotlight, which certainly turns heads.
  8. Eco-Friendly Commuting: I love that I can commute without consuming gas or generating exhaust emissions. Although my individual impact may seem small, I'm proud to contribute positively without needing an expensive electric car.
  9. Affordable Subscription: At just $49 a month for the Unagi Electric Scooter All-Access Subscription, it’s a fantastic deal. I often spend more than that on gas, and it has liberated me from the need to drive others around.
  10. Pure Enjoyment: The fun I experience while riding is worth every penny.

Now, let’s discuss ten aspects I find less favorable about my Unagi Model One Electric Scooter:

  1. Annoying Beeping: The beeping sounds from the control panel are excessively loud. I often need to power it on early in the morning, and the noise can disturb my family and echo through the neighborhood.
  2. Shifting Hand Grips: After each ride, I find myself readjusting the hand grips, which may be due to my grip style.
  3. Discomfort in Hand Grips: The ergonomic design of the hand grips tends to give me discomfort, akin to "gamer's hands" after long rides.
  4. Lack of Phone Holder: While not a major issue, I wish there were a built-in phone holder. I’ve been experimenting with various accessories to attach one without modifying the scooter.
  5. Missing Accessories: A front basket and drink holder would be great additions. I hope Unagi or other users might design some accessories soon.
  6. Limited Range: Unagi claims a 15-mile range, but I usually achieve around 10–12 miles per charge, especially when using my power management techniques.
  7. Slow Charging: Charging takes about 5–6 hours. A faster charging option or a removable battery would greatly enhance usability.
  8. Handlebar Stability: There's a slight flex in the handlebars, which sometimes disrupts my balance.
  9. No Music Feature: It would be nice to play music via Bluetooth through the scooter’s speakers in addition to adjusting the volume.
  10. Too Much Attention: While I love the attention my scooter draws, it can be overwhelming at times. I sometimes just want to get to my destination without being interrupted.
