The first trimester can be particularly stressful for expectant mothers, as statistics indicate that approximately one in five pregnancies may encounter miscarriage threats during this sensitive phase. When symptoms arise, determining the status of the pregnancy can be challenging. Traditional methods, including invasive clinical procedures and serum progesterone tests, may take hours to yield results.
Innovative Approach Using SERS
Researchers at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University have proposed that a method known as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) could be pivotal in this scenario. This sensitive technique detects extremely low concentrations of biomarkers in complex biological fluids like blood or urine. The research team developed a diagnostic chip coated with 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (MPBA), a chemical designed to capture miscarriage-related biomarkers from urine samples.
The lead researcher, Ling Xing Yi, explained, “Typically, molecules linked to miscarriage risk are too diluted in bodily fluids, making them difficult to detect at low concentrations. Our team has innovated a SERS ‘confine and capture’ method, employing a chemical targeting agent to isolate these biomarkers from urine, enabling rapid miscarriage risk detection.”
Validation of the Diagnostic Tool
In a study involving 40 pregnant women who exhibited symptoms of threatened miscarriage, the new technology demonstrated impressive accuracy. The test results corresponded with the pregnancy outcomes for all participants.
“This non-invasive toolkit will empower clinicians to assess the likelihood of spontaneous miscarriage in women presenting with symptoms,” noted obstetrics and gynecology expert Ku Chee Wai, a contributor to the research.
