Reclaiming Your Day: Simple Strategies for Positivity

Written on

Chapter 1: Overcoming Tough Days

Often, the narrative surrounding tough days can feel overly inspirational or clichéd. However, after a heartfelt request from my partner, I felt compelled to explore this topic. Recently, we found ourselves discussing how a challenging day at work can overshadow the rest of our time.

My typical response to a tough day is to brush it off and concentrate on the remaining hours. While this strategy allows me to keep moving forward, it doesn't provide an emotional outlet for the negativity I experienced. Conversely, my girlfriend thrives on dialogue as a remedy for such days. Though she doesn't work in a traditional office setting, the sentiment remains applicable.

During our discussion on how to avoid letting difficult days dictate our mood, she shared an intriguing Instagram video from @breatheintransformation. It proposed the idea of "saving the day" by intentionally engaging in a single uplifting activity to counterbalance the negativity encountered.

The video suggested various activities to reclaim your day, such as taking a walk, preparing a delicious meal, or chatting with a loved one.

This concept resonates with many of us; we all experience challenging moments. At its core, the idea emphasizes that performing simple, affirmative actions with purpose can lead to a shift in our mood.

This aligns with the understanding that our reactions and feelings toward life's stimuli are largely influenced by our conscious choices and self-awareness. Acknowledging that we have control over our emotions might not sound appealing, but in reality, we often have a brief moment to decide how intensely we will respond to emotional triggers.

In a similar vein, unless someone has a predisposition due to a specific condition or mental health issue, we can also choose to detach from emotional responses even after the event has passed. However, this process is not as straightforward as flicking a switch; it requires effort and dedication.

For some, this effort may involve practices like meditation or conscious exercises. Clearly, for the 1.7 million viewers of the aforementioned Instagram video, "saving the day" became a form of that effort.

I genuinely appreciate content that fosters self-awareness and positivity, empowering individuals to develop their own psychological coping strategies.
