Navigating Cannabis Consumption: Understanding the Risks and Rewards

Written on

Chapter 1: The Shift in Cannabis Legislation

The legalization of cannabis is gaining momentum globally, with Uruguay and Canada leading the charge. Nearly half of the United States has followed suit, and Europe is inching closer to similar reforms. Is this a sign that the "War on Drugs" is nearing its conclusion? It appears that governments are beginning to recognize that prohibition often results in more harm than good. This change is long overdue; no one should face incarceration for using marijuana.

However, the shift to legalization does not eliminate the associated risks. While alcohol consumption is legally permitted, we are all aware of its adverse effects when abused. In contrast, there seems to be less public awareness regarding cannabis consumption patterns. As more regions embrace recreational marijuana, it is crucial to discuss safe usage practices.

Consider this: when someone drinks a six-pack of beer for breakfast, most people would label that as problematic behavior. If an individual claims they can only function after consuming vodka, we might express concern about their alcohol dependence. Yet, how often do we scrutinize cannabis consumption in the same way?

Most cannabis users lack a fundamental understanding of THC, CBD, and terpenes. Few can differentiate between Indica and Sativa strains, yet many base their judgment of cannabis quality solely on potency. Imagine applying the same logic to alcohol: "This shot gets you drunk—what a great drink!" is something few would say.

During my recent visit to New York City in July 2022, I noticed that while cannabis quality has evolved, it may not have improved in the right ways. Products with high THC content are prevalent, with some strains exceeding 30% THC but lacking sufficient CBD. Moreover, the packaging often omits essential information about the terpenes present.

While we cannot expect everyone to become a cannabis connoisseur, it is imperative that those selling these products educate their customers about potential side effects.

Did you know that high THC levels paired with low CBD levels could lead to anxiety or even schizophrenia? Are you aware that a single cannabis edible might contain more THC than several joints combined? The strength of today's marijuana significantly surpasses that of what was available in the 1960s.

As the conversation around cannabis and mental health intensifies—especially with some attributing gun violence to its use—we must address the need for safe consumption practices.

"Cannabis-induced psychosis is a genuine concern. I have witnessed friends struggle after excessive marijuana use for years. Perhaps you know someone facing similar challenges."

Section 1.1: Understanding Cannabis-Induced Risks

Legalization advocates often label cannabis as a "gateway drug," suggesting it leads to harder substances, while opponents see it as a potential remedy for opioid addiction. Both viewpoints hold merit, yet they overlook a crucial aspect: cannabis can also be a "sticking point drug." Many individuals do not engage with alcohol or harder drugs but may smoke excessive amounts of marijuana for years. The pressing question remains: is it truly healthy to be high consistently for prolonged periods?

The answer seems clear. While an occasional joint may not severely impact mental health (with some exceptions), numerous members of the cannabis community are familiar with individuals whose lives have stagnated due to excessive marijuana use. Hospitals are reporting an increasing number of cases of cannabis "overdose," especially among those consuming edibles. But what does "overdose" on cannabis really entail?

Fortunately, there have been no reports of fatal overdoses attributed to cannabis. However, this does not imply that consuming excessive amounts is without risk.

After discussing this topic with friends and reflecting on my own experiences, I compiled a list of signs indicating a potential cannabis overdose:

  1. Concentration Issues: Individuals with ADD or ADHD may find their symptoms exacerbated after consuming too much cannabis. What some perceive as "creativity" can instead lead to difficulty focusing on conversations or tasks.
  2. OCD Symptoms: For those with OCD, it’s essential to monitor symptoms post-consumption. The initial relief may be followed by a worsening of symptoms.
  3. Agitation: While cannabis is often seen as a means to relax, many heavy users exhibit neurotic behavior and heightened anxiety when faced with challenges.
  4. Nausea: Similar to the effects of alcohol, excessive cannabis consumption can lead to vomiting, particularly among those who dab or take large hits.
  5. Anxiety Disorders: Cannabis-induced anxiety can arise from a combination of the aforementioned symptoms. Strong strains may elevate heart rates, contributing to anxiety experiences.

I am a proponent of legalization, but I advocate for a responsible approach to its implementation. As consumers eagerly explore new legal products and businesses aim to profit, it is vital to ensure that this transition does not lead to adverse consequences. The enthusiasm surrounding legalization combined with the profit-driven motives of investors could create a precarious situation.

I believe there is nothing inherently wrong with enjoying a joint after a long day; however, treating cannabis consumption as a benign activity without any risks can be misleading. Just as alcohol can be enjoyable in moderation but damaging when abused, the same holds true for cannabis.

If you have additional signs of cannabis "overdose," please share your thoughts in the comments!

The second video, "What is mental health? | What Is Explainers," provides a clear overview of mental health concepts, shedding light on how they intersect with cannabis consumption and societal perceptions.

Chapter 2: Cultivating a Culture of Safe Consumption

As we navigate the landscape of legalized cannabis, it is crucial to prioritize education and awareness around safe consumption practices. Just as with any substance, responsible use is key to reaping the benefits while minimizing risks.
