Uncovering 11 iOS 16 Features Hidden from WWDC 2022
Written on
Apple enthusiasts have long awaited the arrival of the latest iOS version, and now that iOS 16 is finally available, many have likely viewed the keynote presentation and gained some insights about the new features. However, it’s important to note that Apple only showcased a limited number of updates during the WWDC, leaving out many intriguing features for various reasons.
In this article, we will explore 11 hidden iOS 16 functionalities that were not disclosed in the keynote, each of which promises to enrich the user experience for iPhone owners. Let’s jump right in!
Recover Deleted Messages with Ease
Previously, recovering deleted messages on your iPhone was restricted to iCloud backups or third-party applications, both of which could be unreliable and time-consuming. With the iOS 16 update, Apple introduces a new feature that allows users to recover deleted messages within a 30-day window after deletion.
This means you no longer have to fret over losing vital messages or the accidental deletion of texts.
View Saved WiFi Passwords at Last
After a long wait, Apple has finally included the option to view WiFi passwords in the iOS 16 update. Users can now access the passwords for all networks their iPhone has connected to directly from the Settings app.
To find this feature, navigate to Settings, select the WiFi page, tap the info icon next to the desired network, and locate the new option to view passwords by selecting the Password section.
You can even copy and share these passwords directly from this page, eliminating the need to take screenshots for sharing.
Unlock Your iPhone with Face ID in Landscape
If you've ever struggled to unlock your iPhone in landscape mode while gaming or watching videos, the iOS 16 update brings a welcome feature that allows Face ID to work in this orientation.
While this capability has been available for iPad Pro users for some time, it’s exciting to see it finally come to iPhones. However, Apple has not yet clarified which iPhone models will support this feature.
Portrait Mode Now Blurs the Foreground
Exclusive to iPhone 13, 13 Pro, and Pro Max users (and likely to be available on the iPhone 14), the Portrait mode in the Camera app now allows users to blur the foreground as well as the background.
This update enhances the realism of photos and improves video recordings in cinematic mode by providing a more accurate depth of field.
Haptic Feedback for the Stock Keyboard
The stock keyboard on the iPhone will now support haptic feedback, a feature many users, including myself, have longed for.
Although some might question the necessity of this feature, it certainly adds a natural feel to typing, making it a significant improvement.
Memoji Stickers for Contacts
For those who enjoy personalizing their contact photos but lack suitable images, iOS 16 now offers Memoji-based contact stickers.
You can select from a variety of Memoji stickers to represent your friends and family, along with new poses and hairstyles to choose from.
Enhanced Features in Apple Music
iOS 16 brings useful updates to the Apple Music app, including the ability to favorite artists directly from their pages and enhanced playlist sorting options.
These changes allow for better song recommendations and notifications about new releases, making for a more personalized music experience.
Upgraded Smart Folder Filters in Notes
The Smart folders in the Apple Notes app have become even more effective with the iOS 16 update, adding new filters for organizing notes by various criteria such as creation date, shared with specific people, and more.
Additionally, a new feature allows for chronological grouping of notes in both list and gallery views.
Duplicate Detection in Photos App
The Photos app now includes a feature that identifies duplicate images, helping users save storage space by allowing them to delete these duplicates easily.
Furthermore, users can copy edits from one image and apply them to others, streamlining the editing process.
Improved Organization in Reminders
The Reminders app is receiving significant updates that enhance organization in both Today and Scheduled lists.
The Today list can now group reminders by time, while the Scheduled list will be categorized by weeks and months.
Visual Look Up Enhancements
The Visual Look Up feature introduced in iOS 15 is getting an upgrade in iOS 16, allowing users to recognize a broader range of subjects, including birds, insects, and famous statues.
This feature is available on devices with A12 Bionic chip and later, and specific regions and languages apply.
