Understanding Facebook's Role in Social Media
Facebook stands as one of the most prominent social media platforms, and I find myself logging in frequently. My primary enjoyment comes from engaging with various groups, where I can connect with individuals who share similar interests from around the globe. This connectivity not only creates a sense of community but also accelerates the exchange of valuable information.
Unlike Instagram, which often presents an overly curated version of life, Facebook offers a more genuine experience. The requirement for users to register with their real names adds an element of authenticity that is sometimes lacking on other platforms where pseudonyms are common. I even rely on Facebook for my main news updates, showcasing its utility.
While many claim that Facebook is losing its appeal, I respectfully disagree. The groups I participate in provide significant value, and I appreciate the ability to reach out to contacts through the platform, even if I lack their phone numbers.
However, there are certain aspects of Facebook that I find quite bothersome. Here are a few of them:
Birthdays
When I first joined Facebook over a decade ago, I was thrilled to receive numerous birthday greetings, even from those who don’t celebrate their birthdays in real life. I made it a point to wish as many people as possible on their special days, prompted by Facebook’s reminders.
Now, birthday messages have become rather lackluster. Most are uninspired, repetitive, and lack genuine sentiment. Despite Facebook's attempts to enhance birthday celebrations with interactive features, the experience remains frustrating. The greetings have devolved from simple "happy birthday" messages to virtually nothing at all.
The next major social media platform could thrive by reinventing how we celebrate birthdays. Given that everyone has one, a fresh, engaging, and meaningful way to acknowledge birthdays could capture significant attention. I’m currently brainstorming ideas for this. Stay tuned!
Duplication of Content
Many of my Facebook friends are also people I follow on Instagram. Since Instagram allows users to post content across both platforms simultaneously, I often encounter repetitive content. Celebrities I admire tend to share the same posts across all their social media accounts, leading to a cycle of redundancy and boredom on Facebook.
Targeted Advertising
I once discussed baby products with a friend via WhatsApp, only to find my Facebook ads flooded with baby-related items. In another instance, after chatting about container homes, my Facebook feed was filled with similar ads. This experience left me feeling quite annoyed. It’s acceptable to see food-related ads when I’m actively searching for food on Facebook, but it feels invasive when the ads reflect conversations I’ve had elsewhere.
These instances made me feel as though Facebook was invading my privacy, leading me to limit my usage and even uninstall the app. It’s disconcerting to think that apps may be tracking my activities outside of their platforms. While I understand that ads are part of the business model, using questionable methods to target users is quite off-putting.
People You May Know
Yes, Facebook, I’m aware of those individuals. However, I have no desire to add them as friends. If I wanted to connect, I would have done so already! I find it intrusive to have their profiles suggested to me, especially since they may just be looking to pry into my life.
The most frustrating aspect of the "people you may know" feature is its persistence. Even when I opt out of seeing these suggestions, they tend to reappear shortly after.
