Chapter 1: The Quest for Meaning
Is it worthwhile to invest in a course to uncover your life's true calling? What does it even signify? Do we really have just one singular life purpose?

The concept of life purpose—finding meaning or direction in our existence—often becomes a pressing issue for many of us. As we transition into adulthood or encounter significant life events, we may start to evaluate our role in the world around us. A popular quote that circulates on social media often adds to this existential anxiety:
“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”
— Mary Oliver
Is having a purpose essential?
I contend that the booming industry focused on helping people discover their life purpose stems from a misunderstanding. What we truly require is a sense of purpose in our lives, rather than a singular purpose. The distinction between using "a" and omitting it can alter everything.
Some individuals intuitively sense their life’s purpose from an early age, while others come to this realization later, often triggered by unexpected experiences. For some, parenthood or their profession embodies their sense of purpose. There’s no definitive right or wrong answer.
Whether you possess a defined purpose or simply live purposefully, this aspect plays a crucial role in your mental health. When faced with challenges at work, in relationships, or regarding health and finances, having a sense of purpose can provide the strength to persevere. Even if you experience loss, finding meaning in your life can instill a will to continue. However, the common misconception is that meaning is bestowed upon us; in reality, we are the architects of our own life's significance.
A sense of purpose fosters personal growth, learning, and motivation, which are vital for a fulfilling life. Without these elements, it is easy to feel stagnant, potentially leading to a decline in mental health. Sometimes, even a simple to-do list can impart a sense of purpose to your day. When you’re feeling low, crafting a to-do list may be the last thing on your mind, yet paradoxically, it could be your best escape route. Ensure that your tasks are manageable.

What does purpose look like?
Across various religions, despite their differences, a common thread is that life's purpose involves loving and supporting one another, easing suffering, and appreciating what we possess. The Christian notion of "neighbor" serves as a reminder that you don't need a grand purpose on a global scale; you can start with those around you—family, friends, colleagues, or even strangers in your community.
My own purpose may appear to revolve around teaching—first in educational settings, then through my writing. However, this focus may shift at any moment. I derive purpose from seeking joy and engaging in activities I love, interacting with others with kindness and compassion, reading, reflecting, and striving to understand the world around me. These endeavors provide meaning to my daily life.

How can you discover your purpose?
The Dalai Lama once remarked,
“I often ask myself what the purpose of life is. I conclude that it is to be happy. We have no guarantee of what will happen in the future, but we live in hope, which is what keeps us going. The basic source of all happiness is a sense of kindness and warm-heartedness towards others. We are all the same as human beings. We are born the same way, we die the same way, and we all want to lead happy lives. The ultimate source of happiness is a mental feeling of joy, and not a wealth of material goods.”
In essence, what brings you joy constitutes your purpose. It might arise from your profession, family life, community involvement, artistic expression, hobbies, or social interactions—a combination of several of these elements is also possible.
Gaining clarity about your purpose and what gives your life meaning involves cultivating self-awareness. A great starting point is embarking on a self-discovery journey. Here are some methods to consider:
- Journaling: Keep a journal to document your thoughts and feelings. This can provide insights into your desires and motivations.
- Emotional Awareness: Pay attention to your emotions. Identify what frustrates you and what uplifts your spirit.
- Identifying Values: Consider taking an online personal values assessment. Listing values independently might lead you to focus on what you think you should value rather than what truly resonates with you.
- Goal Setting: Write down your objectives across different life areas. A helpful exercise is to list what you don’t want in your life, which can unveil critical issues that need addressing.
- Listening to Your Inner Voice: Engage in manual activities like cooking or gardening in silence. This can help your thoughts surface.
- Physical Feedback: Your body can signal what brings you happiness—notice when you feel relaxed or energized.
- Joy Journaling: Keep a small notebook to jot down moments of delight and seek out everyday joys.
- Reading: If you need additional guidance, consider reading books focused on discovering purpose. A recommended read is "Finding Your Own North Star: Claiming the Life You Were Meant to Live" by Martha Beck, which helps reconnect you with your true self.
