In a world where I constantly seek happiness, the mere thought of compiling a list of joyful moments has unleashed a cascade of tears that even my routine testosterone injections can't seem to halt. Contrary to the stereotype that trans men are emotionless, I've proven time and again that I too can cry. Right now, the idea of revisiting my happiest memories feels daunting, as if I am navigating a minefield with my past hidden beneath the surface.

Last night’s dreams did some of that emotional excavation for me, as they often do. One dream provided me with a bittersweet hug from someone I can no longer embrace, only for my subconscious to begin unpacking the events that led to this separation. In my nightmare, I transformed into the queer, trans antagonist, ruining someone’s special day simply by being my authentic self and yearning for acceptance at a celebration.

Upon waking, I found solace in knowing that such a scenario was impossible. I sit far away, on the balcony of our thirteenth residence in a month and a half—if I’m counting correctly. Regardless, I hope this place feels like home for a while, especially as I watch the breathtaking sunrise while I type.

As the blue mountains gradually emerge from the soft pink and light blue mist, I’m reminded of a natural trans flag unfurling in the sky. I attempted to capture this beauty in a photograph, but sunrises always seem to elude the camera's grasp.

I cradle my beloved green mug, adorned with a tree that would have perished in a fire a few years back. Yet, the memory of that magnificent tree remains untouched. The steam rising from my tea is a comforting caress against the cool morning air. The world around me is tranquil, filled only with birdsong and the rhythmic tapping of my keys. In this moment, I feel a profound sense of safety.

While this experience may not be pure joy or unbridled euphoria, there’s a sense of contentment present. It embodies warmth blended with a pleasant chill, forming the foundation of a life I am in the process of reconstructing. Mornings like this, coupled with the words I write, act as the mortar that will support the bricks of my identity as I lay them down, one by one. They meet me exactly where I am, free from judgment.

Is this my happiest moment? It’s irrelevant. What matters is that this moment is genuine. I refuse to compare this intricate blend of emotions with my past or future; I simply wish to embrace them all. I want to express my gratitude for the beauty surrounding me and share it with you as it is.
