Chapter 1: Rethinking Writer Inclusion

In my journey as a publication creator, I've come to the realization that I must be more discerning when selecting new writers for our platform.

Initially, my vision was to foster an inclusive environment, establishing some flexible guidelines that I presumed everyone would naturally follow. I even welcomed contributors without scrutinizing their profiles or writing styles.

However, as our publication expanded, it became increasingly challenging to manage those who disregarded the guidelines—particularly concerning AI-generated content. Occasionally, some articles that were not human-authored slipped through the cracks.

Given our commitment to rapid publishing, a practice we intend to uphold as long as our writers desire it, the prospect of conducting thorough checks on each article became overwhelming. To alleviate the workload for both myself and my editorial team, I've chosen to implement a more rigorous vetting process for new writers. This way, I can focus on ensuring quality from the outset rather than constantly checking each submission.

Essentially, any contributor I suspect of utilizing AI for their writing, which is now prohibited for monetized content, will not be invited to join our publication. Yet, I acknowledge that I'm only human and my schedule is quite packed, especially since I've taken on the role of a boost nominator. I'd prefer to dedicate my time to properly assessing articles for potential boosts rather than other tasks.

Despite my efforts to thoroughly vet new writers, there may still be a case or two where rule violators evade detection. Should this occur, I will promptly reject any questionable articles and remove the offending writer from our platform once I become aware of the situation.

As we align with Medium's updated policies, we too will emphasize quality. However, this shift does not imply that we will adopt an elitist stance. When I refer to "quality," I mean "human quality."

I aspire to see writers invest time in refining their skills and submitting stories that convey genuine meaning, even if the subject matter isn't extraordinary. Both our platform and Medium expect a fundamental standard of quality.

Write from your experiences and knowledge, and keep it authentic. Even if your work has imperfections and room for growth, at Read or Die, we will always value the effort and commitment of our human writers.
