Empowering Our Brothers: A Call for Compassion and Self-Respect

Written on

Chapter 1: The Importance of Self-Presentation

While shopping at my local grocery store, I noticed a man ahead of me whose pants sagged precariously low. This is a common sight and didn’t immediately surprise me. However, I observed him adjusting his pants repeatedly, leading me to judge him as a misguided young man. Once I turned into the cereal aisle, I quickly forgot about him as I focused on my shopping.

As I continued, I overheard two women in their thirties discussing a topic that piqued my curiosity. One sister expressed her frustration, saying, “That’s why people don’t take Black men seriously.” The other chimed in, noting how “disgusting that was.” Although I wore earbuds and pretended not to hear, I was deeply intrigued by their comments.

It soon dawned on me that they were referring to the man with sagging pants. Upon closer inspection, I realized he was actually in his late 40s. It struck me how much negative attention he was attracting; I could see the disapproval in the expressions of those around him. Part of me wanted to approach him and share insights about self-worth, believing that true self-awareness fosters self-love. If you genuinely love yourself, my brother, you wouldn’t present yourself in such a manner.

Ultimately, I decided against engaging with him and continued my shopping. After a brief period, I no longer spotted him in the store.

However, as I loaded my groceries into my car, I saw him approaching with his own cart. I felt compelled to speak to him this time. As he passed, I simply nodded, but my desire to connect lingered. After putting my shopping cart away, I noticed he was parked a few spots down. This was my chance. Not wanting to come off as harsh, I genuinely wanted to share a positive message with him.

I retrieved a copy of the Final Call Newspaper from my backseat and walked over. “Greetings, my brother,” I said as I approached. We exchanged handshakes, and he asked how I was doing.

“I'm well, thanks to God—” I began, but he quickly interjected, “Good! Good!”

I continued, “Brother, I wanted to give you this FCN and hope you can take some time to read it.” He nodded affirmatively, saying, “Yes, sir, absolutely.” To my surprise, he pulled up his pants and tightened his belt. “Excuse my swag, brother,” he said, seeking my understanding.

After adjusting his attire, he accepted the newspaper and thanked me. I concluded our conversation with, “Brother, we should always strive to carry ourselves with dignity. This applies not just to us, but to all Black individuals.” We shook hands again, and I took my leave.

Though I felt good about our interaction, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of guilt. I recalled how I initially judged him, and despite my internal criticism, I recognized that I was no better than those who openly expressed disdain. The difference was that I held compassion for my fellow man. When I see my brothers, I see reflections of myself, and I wish for them what I wish for myself.

Long life to you! Wishing health and peace to you and your family!

May peace be upon you!
