Emerging Tech Job Opportunities: A 2022 Outlook

The Future of Tech Employment
According to a recent study by CompTIA, the tech job market is projected to add around 178,000 new positions in 2022. This growth isn't confined to traditional tech hubs like Silicon Valley and New York City; instead, nearly 48 states are expected to see an influx of tech roles.
CompTIA's State of the Tech Workforce report highlights a significant year-on-year boost in technology-related employment. In 2021 alone, the sector welcomed about 80,000 new workers, contributing to a total of approximately 8.7 million individuals employed in tech positions across the United States.
Tim Herbert, CompTIA's chief research officer, noted in a statement, “The data illustrates the constantly evolving tech workforce and its broad effects on economies at the national, state, and metropolitan levels. While the numbers are impressive, they also serve as a reminder of the collaborative efforts among workers, employers, educators, and government entities to foster a vibrant tech workforce.”
Current Demands in the Tech Sector
This year, companies are actively seeking highly specialized talent in various areas:
In particular, the need for data scientists is skyrocketing. Projections from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that jobs in the data science field will increase by 22 percent by 2030. Emsi Burning Glass, which analyzes job postings nationwide, reports that the median salary for a data scientist is currently $112,359, which is significantly higher than the average tech salary of $104,566, according to the latest Dice Tech Salary Report.
Cybersecurity is also experiencing a surge in demand, as the industry continues to struggle with a shortage of qualified professionals. Mike Hamilton, a former Chief Information Security Officer for the City of Seattle and now the founder and CISO at security firm Critical Insight, remarked, “Recently, it has become evident that this is a seller's market. The Great Resignation has intensified the existing shortage of skilled workers, and factors like remote work and reduced travel have become increasingly important.”
Regardless of your specialization, there is undoubtedly a strong appetite for tech talent. However, employers are not simply looking for anyone; in a competitive job market, mastering essential tools and honing in on specific technologies can greatly enhance your chances of securing a position that you truly desire.
