Embracing the Struggles of Writing: A Journey of Passion and Grit
Written on
Chapter 1: The Drive Behind Writing
Writing as a side endeavor demands resilience, commitment, and often, a fair share of struggle. Prepare to confront your inner challenges; the late nights and self-doubts are all part of the journey. It’s not for the faint-hearted.
As a teacher and writer—currently prioritizing the former—I recognize the significance of nurturing our passions both inside and outside the classroom. However, justifying these passions can be tough when the outcomes don't meet our expectations. We must prioritize our livelihoods, but how do we maintain our motivation?
Section 1.1: The Burning Passion
This passion is akin to the all-consuming desire described by Robert Frost—a force that keeps us awake at night, needing careful management through effective strategies. It’s not merely a want; it’s an essential part of our existence, manifesting whether we document it or not.
It permeates every aspect of our lives: the forests, the trees, the soil, and even the unseen elements of our universe. Without action, desire is just a fantasy—akin to hoping on a shooting star. Even Pinocchio would agree that wishing alone won’t suffice.
But desire can also ignite action, propelling us forward in even the darkest times. Initially, we may feel at its mercy, but with time, we learn to harness it, channeling it into our creative endeavors. This drive is especially crucial for those of us engaged in the demanding craft of writing.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Writer Within
We are all writers at heart. Stories represent the universal language that connects humanity. While an appreciation for the nuances of language can spark our interest, understanding the profound influence of words transforms everything.
Initially, we express our desires; then we realize we’re not alone and begin to mirror others. Ultimately, we discover our unique voices, contributing creatively to the world around us. Often, the quiet observers have the most profound insights to share. Regardless of whether we ever write another word, our identity as writers remains intact.
Section 1.2: Embracing Discomfort
Fort Minor sums it up well: “50% pain, 20% skill, 15% concentrated power of will, 10% luck, and 5% pleasure.” This breakdown, while focused on the music industry, resonates with the writing journey. Life doesn’t adhere to fixed percentages, but pain and discomfort are integral to our creative processes.
Rejection, lack of acknowledgment, and negativity can inflict significant pain. Yet, the vulnerability that arises from self-examination brings its own challenges. Processing painful experiences requires mental strength, and one of the best remedies is sharing our stories. Although fear can be paralyzing, shifting our perspective can reignite our momentum.
Chapter 2: The Journey of Creation
Writing can be draining, particularly when we lose sight of our motivations. However, those who resist the urge to surrender to fatigue and maintain their voice stand a chance of making the impact they seek.
All writers are artists, many of whom struggle to make ends meet. Pursuing our passions with limited rewards is common, but it won’t deter us from expressing our creativity. Each word we craft, type, or articulate becomes more powerful through practice.
Eminem captures this sensation perfectly—a “certain feeling” that comes when we’re truly in the zone. Those of us driven by passion recognize this feeling, clinging to it, fearing it might never return. It’s extraordinary, inexplicable, and fuels our desire to persevere.

Final Thoughts
The writing struggle is authentic and often unrewarding, filled with obstacles that require grit and resolve to overcome. The phrase “no pain, no gain” feels like a dramatic understatement at times.
The deep-seated desire within us serves as a potent fuel, propelling our creativity and skill to new heights. It’s not just a mindset; it’s a foundational aspect of who we are. Even if no one reads our words, the act of writing itself is its own reward. That’s why we’ll continue to share our stories.
