Embracing Change: A Journey from Loss to New Beginnings

Written on

Chapter 1: The Beginning of a New Chapter

After experiencing a devastating financial setback, I found myself navigating through one of the toughest years of my life. The journey commenced when I traveled from Toulouse to Athens in January 2021, eager to embrace a Greek winter in the Peloponnese—a region close to my heart.

I had the privilege of residing in Greece longer than the usual 90-day limit thanks to a residency permit granted under the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement. My hope was to find a small apartment to rent long-term, ideally staying until May.

By the end of January, I was fortunate to stay with friends in a stunning home overlooking the sea near Stoupa. That evening, as I received a shocking WhatsApp message, my world turned upside down: the investment firm I had trusted with my savings had collapsed.

Thus began an arduous year characterized by confusion, poor decisions, financial strain, and an overwhelming sense of loss.

Section 1.1: Finding Solace in Greece

With no immediate plans to return to France, I opted to remain in Greece, where I had two rentals already arranged. My time there offered a brief respite, allowing me to process my situation, though acceptance still eluded me even a year later.

The first rental was a charming off-grid property owned by a couple from the UK, who had also faced financial deceit. Their story resonated with mine, and we quickly bonded over shared experiences.

After a week, I moved to my beloved Nafplio, where Kostas, the owner of my favorite apartment, had become a close friend. This stay allowed me to gather my thoughts, handle necessary calls, and inform my family of my predicament, knowing they would spread the news before my return.

Section 1.2: The Emotional Turmoil of Return

Returning to France three months earlier than anticipated was bittersweet. Arriving back at Blagnac, I was greeted by familiar faces from the long-stay car park, who welcomed me warmly despite my tears. They offered a place to stay if needed, showcasing the kindness of strangers.

Upon arriving home, I discovered my neighbors had prepared the wood burner for my arrival, a small but meaningful gesture. Unfortunately, my landlady had turned on energy-consuming heaters, leading to an unwelcome surprise in my utility bill.

Despite this, I managed a minimal grocery run and prepared a simple meal, shedding tears as I reflected on leaving my cherished home. The next two and a half months became an emotional challenge as I prepared to move, often overwhelmed by sadness and anger.

Thankfully, I stumbled upon a subscription to Gaia.com, which provided enriching content about ancient civilizations. This, along with unwavering support from friends and family, helped me stay grounded during the chaos.

Chapter 2: The Search for Stability

As I contemplated my next steps, I learned from a social worker that my voluntary termination of the rental contract might limit my housing assistance. Friends offered financial support, and I even received an offer to use a cottage in Wales, highlighting the generosity of those around me.

Slowly, I formulated a plan. My previous trips to Greece had made me eligible for residency, and I decided to take the plunge and move there permanently. I would finally be able to immerse myself in the language and culture I adored.

However, downsizing my belongings proved to be a painful process. The open house I held was exhausting, as I dealt with strangers negotiating over my possessions. Fortunately, supportive friends helped with the move, and I found temporary accommodations to ease the transition.

Crooked Thinking

As I finally settled into a new routine in Greece, I faced various challenges, including fierce competition for rental properties. I learned that online reservations didn’t guarantee a place, and I faced many disappointments along the way.

However, a friend’s connection led me to a small house available for a reasonable rent, offering me a chance to create a new home. I embraced the uncertainty of my nomadic lifestyle, realizing that change no longer frightened me.
