Books and Audiobooks: My 2023 Reading Journey
Written on
Chapter 1: A Year of Literature
In 2023, I engaged with a total of 31 books, primarily through audiobooks. While listening offers a quicker route through literature, I often find that my mind wanders, especially when I’m trying to drift off to sleep. This can lead to needing to rewind and revisit sections the following day, which is why I still value traditional reading.
Reading great literature multiple times reveals new layers and insights, enriching the experience further.
Section 1.1: Notable Reads
January Selections
- "Happy-Go-Lucky" by David Sedaris
- "Under the Banner of Heaven" by Jon Krakauer
- "Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine" by Gail Honeyman
February Highlights
- "The Embassy of Cambodia" by Zadie Smith
- "A Passage North" by Anuk Arudptagasam
- "The Nasty Bits" by Anthony Bourdain
March Recommendations
- "Spare" by Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex
- "Red Line" by Joby Warrick
April to December
- Continued with works like "Chile" by Caterina Perrone and "Olive Kitteridge" by Elizabeth Strout, culminating in "The Woman in Me" by Britney Spears.
Section 1.2: Classics Worth Revisiting
These timeless stories were so impactful that I found myself revisiting them:
- "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote
- "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck
Biographies That Captivated Me
Among the biographies, "George Michael" by James Gavin stood out for its objectivity, revealing a more balanced view compared to typical autobiographies.
Films Worth Watching
I also enjoyed the film adaptation of "Under the Banner of Heaven," featuring a remarkable performance by Andrew Garfield, and Angelina Jolie's direction of "First They Killed My Father" was commendable.
Chapter 2: Personal Growth Through Writing
The first video, "The Best of Classical Music Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, Vivaldi Most Famous Classic Pieces," explores some of the most celebrated classical pieces that have shaped musical history. This inspired me to reflect on the emotional impact of literature and music on our lives.
The second video, "The Best of Classical Music - 50 Greatest Pieces: Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Bach..." showcases a selection of timeless compositions that resonate deeply with audiences. This reminds me of the healing power of both literature and music in our daily lives.
Achievements and Losses in 2023
Joining Medium on April 21, 2023, was a transformative experience for me, thanks to Janet Daniels-Thomas for introducing me to the platform. It has provided me with purpose and hope.
Despite personal losses, including the passing of my father, I found comfort in the supportive community of writers that I’ve connected with. Their encouragement has been invaluable to me.
Looking Forward
I am eager to hear about your favorite reads from 2023. What books have left a lasting impression on you?
